Positioned between retrospective and living studio, the exhibition moves across time rather than following a fixed chronology. Explored against the backdrop of colonial penal codes that criminalise queer bodies, this project examines how Lunuganga subverts traditional paradigms of garden design through its representations and ecological aspects which questions the perceptions of what defines “normal” and “natural”. It underscores the importance of incorporating otherness into architectural and landscape design to create inclusive spaces. This exploration is facilitated through an installation of the same title, scheduled for viewing in December 2023, as well as a series of workshops, and public talks leading up to the To Lunuganga programme closing event in July 2024. The project seeks to promote ongoing research and dialogue that recognises and celebrates the hidden queer histories within our built environment. for Geoffrey Bawa: It is Essential to be There&nbsp;which was the first major exhibition which draws from the archives to look at Bawa’s practice. Organized in four thematic sections, exploring relationships between ideas, drawings, buildings and places, the exhibition explores the different ways in which images were used in Bawa’s practice. Over 120 documents from the Bawa archives, most of which have never been shown publicly previously, was on view, including a section on unbuilt work and Bawa’s own photographs from his travels. <img The Sri Lankan architect succeeded in fusing sensitivity for local context with the technological discoveries and design principles of modernism in his work. A pioneer of bioclimatic architecture, Bawa incorporated materials and layouts specific to Sri Lanka’s monsoon climate and storied architectural history into his modernist designs. Although he never built outside Asia, his work and way of thinking resonate far beyond the region. Gathering essays by scholars and writers across a multitude of disciplines, this volume spotlights the beautiful architectural drawings of Bawa’s practice. It is interspersed with essays by women writers that provide an insight into the historical threads that tie women’s experiences of war to the contemporary challenges that women face in post-war Sri Lanka. This book is therefore meant to be an intergenerational transference of memory between those women that have lived through violent conflict and those who were too young to remember the true, human cost of war, as experienced by ordinary citizens. The narratives shared here, unequivocally acknowledge that women’s histories matter, need to be acknowledged and must occupy the nexus of history, justice and peace if the next generation is to create a future better than our past. Even as struggles and hardship intensified for women and non-binary human rights defenders, they innovated on ways to survive, collectivise and draw strength to face adversities. Much like how lichens find way to grow on bare, inhospitable earth, feminist movements sprouted and sustained life even in scorched landscape. This report takes you through the journey of how feminist grant-making prepared the grounds for human rights defence to spawn and fruit even in inhospitable terrains.
